Also know as a Gunner's Knot.
Uses:
- Securely binding the mouth of a bag, or as a quick whipping, (eg to stop a rope from fraying, or to hold strands together at the base of a splice or multistrand knot).
Advantages:
- Very hard to untie, especially when wet or tight. (That is its virtue!) It is usually intended to be cut off (or left permanently), rather than untied.
- Serves as an excellent hitch that is unlikely to come untied accidentally.
Disadvantages:
- Canot be tied to a flat surface. Needs a curved surface for proper function.
- Too easy to tighten, and too hard to loosen.
