Drape the working end over or through the object to whch the rope will be fastened.

bring the working end back out and ober the the standing part and then through the loop created. Tighten by pulling simultaneously on the working end and standing part.

Advantages:

It is a valuable component of a wide variety of useful and reliable hitches, bends, and knots.

Disadvantages:

The half hitch is not a load bearing knot.
