Figure 8 Bend

Tie a figure 8 knot in the working end of the rope.

Thread the working end of the second rope into the figure 8 knot in the first rope, as shown.

Continue to follow the lead of the first rope. The goal is to create a second figure 8 knot that duplicates the first figure 8 knot.

When bothropes have been woven into one figure 8 knot, carefully compress and tighten the composite knot into the figure 8 shape. (For the greatest strength, make sure the working end of both ropes forms the outer bight at both ends of the knot.)

Aslo know as: Flemish Bend.

Uses:

A safe, and simple way to join two ropes of similar size and construction.

Advantages:

Simple and reliable.
Reasonably easy to tie, and check.

Disadvantages:

Should not be used with ropes that differ much in size and for safety the ends should be longer.
