Munster Hitch

Twist a coil into the rope with the upper and lower strands of the coil folded together, as shown.

Clip the carabiner into both sides of the folded strand with the spine of the carsbiner next to the strand that will bear the load.

Uses:

Used for controlling the rate at which a rope is fed out, especially under tension. Normally used on a screw-gate karabiner.

Advantages:

When not under tension, the rope can be fed easily and rapidly in either direction, but jams effectively to limit a fall when the belayer pulls firmly on the free end.

Disadvantages:

Very effective in holding a big shock load, the knot relies on rope-onrope friction which may damage the sheath.
Twists the rope when abseiling or lowering a load.
