Munster Hitch
Uses:
- Used for controlling the rate at which a rope is fed out, especially under tension. Normally used on a screw-gate karabiner.
Advantages:
- When not under tension, the rope can be fed easily and rapidly in either direction, but jams effectively to limit a fall when the belayer pulls firmly on the free end.
Disadvantages:
- Very effective in holding a big shock load, the knot relies on rope-onrope friction which may damage the sheath.
- Twists the rope when abseiling or lowering a load.
