• Used as a basic component of complex knots, or to tie off the loose end a rope to make a knot more secure, (usually doubled or in pairs). This can be useful when tied in the end of a rope or cord to stop it fraying or unravelling, or as a stopper knot to prevent a rope from escaping through an eyelet or pulley

  • Can be tied in the air, (making a simple loop), or around a rope or spar.

  • Very hard to untie when wet or tight, and can weaken the rope by up to 50%.
